Bayfield Harvest Trail Online ShoppingGreat Oak Farm and Pasture Perfect Poultry
Chris Duke and Family
28100 Maple Ridge Road, Mason, WI 54856
greatoakfarm@gmail.com

Great Oak Farm is a highly diversified sustainable farm located about 15 miles south of Ashland, WI.  We work hard to produce high quality, flavorful, truly natural products using only USDA organic approved pest and disease controls and all-natural fertilizers.  We do not use or feed any genetically modified crops, synthetic hormones, or sub-theraputic antibiotics in any crop or livestock production!

To complement our fruit and vegetable production, we keep 30 hives of honeybees for pollination and, of course, honey!  Raw, all-natural wildflower honey from our hives will be available for sampling - come taste the difference.  We are also a founding member of Pasture Perfect Poultry, producing pasture raised chickens and turkeys the way nature intended - on pasture without pesticides, hormones, or antibiotics.

We cordially invite you to stop by and take a walk around the farm with us!   Farm tours will be available throughout the Harvest Trail weekend.  We have a wide variety of livestock at Great Oak Farm, many of which are rare and historic heritage breeds honored on the Slow Food Ark of Taste (www.slowfoodusa.com).  Majestic Bourbon Red turkeys, Plymouth Barred Rock chickens, wooly Navajo-Churro sheep, and gentle Red Wattle pigs are all humanely raised and free-ranged throughout the growing season.  This is a family friendly farm - children are especially encouraged to visit!

A unique part of the Bayfield experience for more than thirty years…. Highland Valley Farm was established when we settled near Bayfield to raise a family in 1977.  Knowledge of beekeeping and honey production we brought with us. We were introduced to raspberry horticulture by our Bayfield predecessors. Blueberry production we pioneered by establishing the first commercial planting of newly developed winter-hardy blueberry varieties in northern Wisconsin. The production of black currants and maple syrup are our most recent enterprise additions.

Over the years we have become recognized for our efforts in promoting sustainable agriculture, our stewardship of the land, horticultural innovations, and superb products. More recently, all three of our adult children have returned to partner with their parents in the farm venture. Our family enjoys sharing the beauty of Bayfield and the bounty of our crops with the many people who visit Highland Valley Farm every year.  Come out to the farm and pick-your-own raspberries and blueberries during our summer harvest or reserve a 10# box of frozen blueberries to be picked up in the fall.  Orchard sweet honey and maple syrup are sold out of our shop as long as supplies last.

Driving Directions: From Hwy 13, take Fish Hatchery Road to County Road J.  Go straight on County Road J and continue straight on Valley View Road approximately 1 mile.

Spirit Creek Farm is a small solar powered non-certified organic family farm that specializes in the production of fermented foods such as Sauerkraut, Kim Chi and Kombucha.  This year in collaboration with a small goat dairy we have begun raising meat goats.  You can find our farm just two miles east of Cornucopia on Highway 13.  On seventy acres of field and forest we grow onions and garlic for our Kim Chi, Vegetables for market and personal use, pasture goats and poultry, and operate a certified food processing facility.  Jennifer is the main muscle on the farm as she is home most of the time raising the children, answering the phone, taking care of animals, growing a garden, and a million other things all at the same time.  In the summer Andrew works off the farm in the marine industry out of Bayfield.  In the winter Andrew manages the production of several tons of Sauerkraut and Kim Chi.  We at Spirit Creek Farm continually work to cultivate our philosophy of sustainability through working with the land and animals, collaborating with local farmers, bringing good food to people and raising our children as stewards of the land.

Established 1996. White Winter Winery produces high quality hand crafted meads, or honey wine, hard ciders and non-alcoholic fruit spritz using locally produced pure Wisconsin honey and fruit. Mead is the oldest fermented beverage in the world but relatively unknown in modern times. We believe strongly in using what is in our own back yard and have built our business on this sustainable practice. We are truly a regional winery using ingredients grown within approximately 150 miles of the cellar. We use what our neighbors produce to make a great product. It helps them, it helps us, it's environmentally and ethically sound, and you, the consumer, know exactly what you are drinking, where it comes from, how it's made, and that every purchase stays in the community and supports a family farm (and winery!).  Some specialty wines and Reserves only sold at the winery. The original homestead was settled by the Vranes family, immigrants from Yugoslavia, in 1914. In 2000, Jay Cablk and Carrie Linder purchased the Vranes Farm from one of the Vranes grandchildren. While the original home is no longer standing, and the windmill has since been replaced with an electric pump, both families came to believe that this land was the key in the pursuit of a better life.
While no longer a dairy operation, the homestead is thriving in a different manner. A large vegetable garden and greenhouse, both egg laying and meat chickens and a small flock of sheep carry on the homesteading tradition.

Great taste is our goal, achieved through our animal husbandry principles that include treating our animals humanely, feeding them chemical-free hay and feeds, and allowing them to mature naturally. As said by our customers, our lamb is the best they have ever tasted.  Vranes Farm is a founding member of Pasture Perfect Poultry and with two other farmers, produce top-quality pasture chickens and turkeys.  Stop by our farm for some great tasting lamb and even better tasting poultry.  All raised the way nature intended - on pasture without chemicals, hormones, or antibiotics.

Hauser’s have been in Bayfield for over 100 years (in 1908).  John Hauser was a gifted horticulturist and when the embargo on seeds from Europe began in 1912, he saw this as an opportunity to grow perennial and strawflowers.  Today, Hauser’s is one of the largest producers of northern field-grown perennials in the country—shipping all over the US.

In 1928, during the depression when apples became a way to make extra income, he acquired the original “Knight” orchard with trees that still produce today.  The farm is now operated by the 3rd, 4th, and 5th generations and has approximately 30 acres of trees with a wide variety of delicious Bayfield apples.

In 1988, the “Red Barn” jam kitchen opened making delectable delights including raspberry, blackberry, blueberry, strawberry, and cherry jams as well as fresh apple butter every season.  Every item is homemade, locally grown, and stated approved!

Driving Directions:
2 ½ miles from Bayfield on County Hwy J—look for the “Hauser’s” sign!
